2023
My sweet Child, fruit of my vine,
How could I have known
When I was told
A sword would pierce
This heart of mine?
I Cry, I Die with every breath I take
My sweet Lord,
Your blood turned to wine,
How could I have known
When I was told
A sword would pierce
This heart of mine?
I Cry, I Die with every tear I shed (Twice)

Program Notes
Tears of Mary, for alto soloist and piano, is a poignant exploration of the Virgin Mary’s grief and unwavering love as she witnesses the crucifixion of her son, Jesus Christ. The sombre melody reflects the immense pain that pierces Mary’s heart.
The lyrics, a series of anguished questions and reflections, transport the listener directly into Mary’s emotional turmoil. We hear her grappling with the prophecy foretold by the angel – that a sword would one day pierce her heart. This foreshadowing hangs over the piece, creating a sense of dread and inevitability.
The repetition of the lines “I Cry, I Die with every breath I take” and “I Cry, I Die with every tear I’ve shed” emphasizes the profound nature of Mary’s suffering. Each breath, each tear, symbolizes the depth of her maternal love and the unbearable torment she endures.
Despite the overwhelming grief, the piece also hints at a glimmer of hope. The reference to Jesus’ blood turned to wine suggests the transformative power of his sacrifice. This subtle undercurrent reminds us that even in the midst of darkness, faith and love can endure.
